It is freezing cold in Brooklyn and it's not letting up, not even a degree. We've been working hard at our store that will be opening soon (hooray!) and thanks to Katie's space heater, we are keeping warm at the same time. It's only been a year and a half since we started this company and I can't believe that we are opening our first store front? I'm a bit in shock and well, shock. I suppose I typically set myself up not to get my hopes up. And, it's funny to note this because I LOVE getting my hopes up. Hope makes me wake up in the AM and puts me to sleep. It inspires me to keep creating and push harder. It kicks me in the behind to think smarter and keeps the tears back when all seems blue. It's also comforting like a friend or lover too.

Here's to HOPE tonight. Thank you! Keep coming and I hope it gets warm sooner than later. XO Moni L. Briones

Happy Holidays: Southern Style

I'm writing this blog from my hometown of Tallahassee, FL. I have to say, I've missed a few of the holiday southern comforts.

A pitcher of sweet iced tea was such a welcome sight on the dinner table. Here's an easy recipe for this southern staple.

Ingredients:
3 Family Size Tea Bags (or 6 One Serving Tea Bags) - Lipton tea works best
2 Cups Sugar
6 Cups Water
4 Cups Ice
Mint Sprigs

Directions:
Place tea bags into a gallon pitcher. Bring water to a boil and pour into pitcher. Let the tea steep for 3 minutes. Dip tea bags in and out of pitcher while it is steeping to help bring out the flavor. Remove tea bags. Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Pour in ice and stir to cool. To serve, pour sweet tea over ice and add a sprig of mint for garnish.

I also had a craving for pecan pie (pronounced "pea-can pie") and made a one at my family's request. The recipe is below. Happy baking!

Ingredients:
1 Frozen Pre-made Pie Crust
5 Table Spoons Butter
1 Cup Light or Dark Packed Brown Sugar
3/4 Cup Light or Dark Corn Syrup
1/2 Teaspoon Salt
3 Eggs
2 Teaspoons Vanilla Extract
1 Cup Chopped Pecans

Directions:
Pre-bake the thawed pie crust at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Lower oven temperature to 350 degrees.
In a medium saucepan combine the butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt. Bring ingredients to a boil over medium heat stirring constantly and continue boiling for 1 minute. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes. In a separate bowl beat the eggs together. Stir in eggs, vanilla, and chopped pecans to the cooked mixture. Place pie crust on a baking sheet and pour mixture into the pie crust.
Place pie in 350 degree oven on the lower rack and bake for 40-45 minutes. Edges should be golden and the middle should be slightly loose when fully baked. Let cool to room temperature and serve.

Happy Mondays guys and gals!

Just wanted to let you in on some exciting things that will be taking place this month.

Moni and I will be back at the Astoria Market next Sunday (November 21st) at Bohemian Hall. We enjoyed getting to know the Queens neighborhood and loved showcasing our new line of sewing patterns. This coming Sunday, we will have plenty of items to stock up for your next craft project including fat quarters, patterns, vintage buttons and trims. We will also have some great gift items too! Come pick out a handmade apron, tote, cosmetic bag, lovely skirts, reworked vintage jewelry, or a hand-poured soy candle. Enjoy next Sunday with us and other crafty vendors at Bohemian Hall 12pm-5pm; it's off of the NQ Astoria Boulevard stop.

In other news, we are proud to announce that the SEW Moni store front will be up and running come December! Get ready to sew and craft as we will be offering more classes, great sewing notions and tools, as well as handpicked fabrics. Stay tuned for more updates for the next few weeks!

SEW Moni's Sewing Talk : Erin Hefner
I decided to learn to sew last fall. 2009 was winding down, and it had been a very turbulent year for me personally. Professionally, I manage in an extremely fast-paced, dynamic and high-pressure environment. Considering both aspects of my life at that time, I knew I was in need of a creative outlet and I was ready to try something new that would take complete focus and bring new energy into my life. I even had in mind ideas for some things I could sew as a small side business if it turned out to be something I enjoyed and was good at.

My mother sewed some of my childhood clothes and I would help her by cutting out the pattern pieces, pinning them to the fabric and cutting out the pieces. I never did any of the actual sewing, but I was always intrigued by the color and texture of the fabric as well as the interesting tools like pinking shears and tomato shaped pincushions. My mother sewed all of the curtains and some of the throw pillows for our house, which were usually out of rich colors and bold patterns. Probably because of this, I grew up with a strong love of interior decorating which has grown stronger throughout adulthood and has turned into something of a hobby. I decided I’d like to be able to sew curtains and throw pillows just like my mom did.

I took a beginner class at an established spot in Manhattan. While I enjoyed it and it was a good place to start, I never felt like anyone was invested in my learning. All work was completed in class so I wasn’t able to retain the knowledge and I didn’t really continue to sew on my own after the sessions ended. I was left without enough skill or confidence to continue.

I had known Moni for a while and as soon as I learned she was teaching, I was excited to sign up for her beginner class where we would complete a tote bag. We learned to thread a machine as well as the basics of fabric, cutting and basic zipper installation. Moni gave us small homework assignments each week to practice techniques such as sewing straight lines and curves, which allowed me to sew on my own and progress between sessions. I could ask questions the next week about anything I needed help with or didn’t fully understand. She also taught us how to adjust tension and stitch length in relationship to different fabrics as well as what to look for in a stitch that has been properly sewn. I ended up with a lined tote bag with an interior pocket that I took to work and bragged about. The fabric pattern is perfectly lined up on the sides, and despite this being a total accident that I didn’t notice until Moni and my classmate pointed it out in amazement, I still allow people to be utterly impressed that I accomplished this in Beginner Sewing.

By now I was hooked and convinced that I could satisfy my desire to design if I continued to learn. I asked Moni if she would focus some sessions on home décor. In these classes I learned ruffles, pleating and hidden zipper installation for pillows as well as pleats, tabs and hemming for curtains. Most importantly, I learned how to cut and measure with seam allowance to end up with a pillow cover or curtain to fit particular dimensions.

At this point, I was ready to go all in and challenge myself with actual product development. I met with Moni to discuss what I was interested in designing and creating. I completed six sessions with Katie where I went from sketches and fabric swatches to an actual pattern to a working sample of something I had designed! Katie really invested in my learning and helped me bring my vision to life.

I’m so glad that I discovered Sew Moni! Sewing has brought me a sense of accomplishment and has allowed me to explore my creative side with a level of focus that brings a sense of calm to my hectic New York City life. Moni and Katie were able to balance guiding me with how much I needed to be challenged to figure things out on my own which is exactly the teaching style I needed. Their investment in my learning and direction with my projects has given me confidence as well as building my skill set with sewing.

This month, we were happy to have Amy Le Clair write and share her sewing journey. Watching Amy learn, as well as share in her excitement for sewing has been wonderful and we are happy that she is pressing on and sewing up a storm! XO Moni

Sewing Talk with Amy Le Clair

I’m finishing my PhD in sociology at New York University and work part time at an HIV research center. I’ve always loved to do creative things in my spare time – crafting, cooking, baking, shopping, decorating – but I’ve never considered myself a particularly artistic person.

I grew up in the suburbs of Boston, and my grandmother used to do little craft and sewing projects with my sister and me when we were little. We made little dolls out of baby socks, Christmas ornaments out of old fashioned wooden clothes pins, and funny faces out of old hosiery. After she passed away at the golden age of 95, we found love notes from my grandfather tucked into the different nooks and crannies of her sewing machine.

I didn’t decide to take sewing classes until more than a year later. My friend Brooke and I were at a craft fair at the Brooklyn Lyceum in March, and she signed us up for the SewMoni mailing list. I learned how to embroider over the winter and thought sewing would be a great compliment. We signed up for Beginning Sewing at SEW Moni with Taru (Sewing Instructor).

In class we learned the basics – the anatomy of the machine, tension and stitch length, edges and seams. Sewing in a straight line was a much harder task than I’d imagined! Taru was great, though, and very patient (even when I broke two machine needles in one class – oops!). At the end of the four weeks I had one small and two large totes completed, with several more planned in my head. I got so excited by all the fabrics and possible color and print combinations! I added an outside pocket to one bag and divided the inside pocket into two on another to fit a cell phone. I was kind of a one-trick-pony, however, and wanted to branch out.

Katie’s (SEW Moni Designer / Sewing Instructor) blog post with the instructions for the apron came at exactly the right time. One of my closest friends from grad school was moving to Philadelphia to start a new job. We both love to cook, so an apron seemed like the perfect going away/housewarming gift. She had showed me the color scheme she wanted her place, so I picked out corresponding fabrics. To create the curved edge I used Katie’s tip and traced an inverted pie plate. I added a pocket to the front (just because I love pockets) and also played with zig zag stitching.

I was so proud of the finished product! I successfully executed pleats and a curved seam. My friend loved it, and I cannot wait to make more. I have one of my grandmother’s old aprons, and I think she’d be proud of me as well. I have so much more confidence now that I’ve completed my first solo project. I even made two zippered pillow covers from the lining/pocket fabric of the apron for my friend’s apartment. I’m hoping to combine my new sewing skills with my embroidering to make some personalized wedding presents.

I’m so excited for Beginning Clothing Construction with Katie. Living in New York City I’m constantly inspired by the clothing and designs I see around me, and these classes are giving me the skills to sew and create in so many new ways. In the next year I’m hoping to add quilting and knitting to my repertoire. Oh, and finish my PhD.

We just finished our July sewing classes and are getting started to move forward with August which means a few things:

1. New Students!

2. New Classes

When I brain storm for new class ideas I often consider the weather. Sounds like a cliche, but it's true. And with fall approaching soon, its definitely time to get to quilting!

In order to quilt its very important to:
1. Research
2. Decide voice of Quilt
3. Consider Colors
4. Define design & Dimension

I intend to go over each steps within the next weeks and to also expand upon where and how to get the quilting resources you need!

In regard to my first step, above is an image I pulled from DesignFreebuies.org for quilt inspiration. I'm also going to go to the MoMA museum today to see what else might influence our fall quilt blocks. Last, I'll more than likely research the idea of "early fall quilts". Was or is this a movement? What is early fall?

Such efforts are my prep or "scout" work, my most favorite part of the quilt design process. Scouting forces me to visit museums, attend events and read books for inspirational purposes---as well as take in dinners with fellow crafters to collaborate!

It takes me at least 2 - 3 weeks of scouting for each quilt I make. Why so long? Quilts are built upon the foundation of not only sewing and craftsmanship, but story telling. Having a clear and thoughtful story to accompany the long hours of needle work is always nicer :) Also, creating quilts is completely different than clothing construction. The process is quite geometrical and requires one to be excited about details!!

All that to say, I am ready to quilt and expect such to be involved with our Sept. class and you one blog at a time!

The Apron: A Step-by-Step Guide

What you'll need:

* 1/2 yard of lining fabric

* 1 yard of face fabric

* Coordinating thread

* Scissors

* Measuring tape

* Straight pins

*Pencil or water-soluble pen

* Sewing machine

* Iron

Taking Measurements

Apron Panel Width
1) Measure the width of your hips. If you're wearing pants or a skirt you can use the side seams of the garment as a guide
2) Add 5 inches to this measurement to account for tucks and seam allowance. This measurement will become the width of the apron panel.
3) Divide this number in half to use for drafting the apron panel. We will call this half-width.

Apron Panel Length
1) Decide on the length of the apron panel. Measure from the waist down to the desired length.
2) Add 1 inch to account for seam allowance.

Apron Tie
1) Measure around your waist.
2) Add 32 inches to this length to account for a bow

Cutting the Apron Panels and Apron Tie

Drafting the Apron Panel Pattern onto the Lining Fabric:

1) Fold fabric in half a little more than the half-width of the apron panel.

2) Using the tape measure and pin, measure down the fold of the fabric to the apron panel length and make a small mark.

3) At this mark, measure across the width of the fabric, making a mark at the half-width.

4) Connect the two points together with a straight line.

5) From the end of this line draw a perpendicular line measuring the apron panel length.

6) The measurements and lines will form a rectangular shape.

7) To make the curved edge, use a cup or plate as a guide to draw the curve.

Cutting the Apron Panel from the Lining Fabric:

1) Cut out apron Panel along the guide lines that you have drawn.

Cutting the Apron Panel from Face Fabric
1) Fold face fabric to appropriate width.
2) Pin previously cut lining fabric on top, lining up the folded edges.
3) Cut out.

Cutting the Apron Tie
1) Cut apron tie 5 inches wide, using the calculated length.
**If your fabric is not long enough to accommodate the tie length, simply cut enough piece to add up to the calculated length. Sew these pieces together to create one tie.**

After the previous steps, you should have cut 1 apron panel from the face fabric, 1 apron panel from the lining fabric, and 1 apron tie.

Sewing the Apron Panel

Joining Apron Panels:
1) Place apron panels on top of each other, right sides together.
2) Pin in place.
3) Starting in the right hand corner, sew down and around the curved edges. End in the left hand corner, leaving the top straight edge of the piece un-sewn.

Notching Apron Panel:
1) Notch apron panel curves by cutting triangles into the seam allowance. This will make it easier when turning the piece right side out.
**Be careful not to cut into the sewn seam**

Turning Apron Panel:
1) Turn apron right side out.
2) Push the corners out so that they lay flat and smooth.
3) Iron entire panel flat.

Top Stitch Apron Panel:
1) Top stitch around all edges of the apron panel 1/8 inch from the edge.
** Top stitch the opening as well in preparation for the tucks**

Adding Tucks to the Apron Panel

Measuring Tuck Placement:
1) Measure 3 inches in frorm the side and place a pin.
2) From that mark measure 1 1/2 inches in and place a pin.
3) Continue this process until you have 3 to 4 pins in place. These pins will determine the placement of the tucks.
4) Repeat these steps on the other side of the apron.

Forming the Tucks:
1) Taking one at a time, fold the apron panel in half (face fabric together) where the pin in placed.
2) Pin this fold together
3) Sew next to this fold 1/4 inch from the fold. Sew 1 1/2 inches down and backstitch.
4) Repeat these steps until all pin markers have been formed into tucks.

Ironing the Tucks:
1) Iron all tucks in one direction so that the folded edges of the tucks face inward.

Sewing the Apron Tie

Ironing the Apron Tie:
1) Iron the raw edges of the apron tie in 1/2 inch.
2) Iron the ends of the apron tie in 1/2 inch.

3) Fold apron tie in half, matching up the folded edges and iron flat.

Attaching Apron Tie to Apron Panel:
1) Lay out the apron tie and open it so that the pressed in seam allowance in exsposed.
2) Line up the raw edge of the apron panel with the raw edge of the apron tie seam allowance.
3) Fold the apron tie back over so that the fold lines meet up.
4) Pin in place.

Top Stitch Apron Tie:
1) Now that everything is pinned together, top stitch the entire apron tie.
2) Start on the apron tie side where the folded edges meet. Sew 1/8 inch from the edge.

Finishing Touches:
1) Iron one last time and then bake some cookies!!!

New York's gone Mad!!

The new season premiere of MadMen is upon us! For those of you who don't watch the show, MadMen is an AMC Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series. The provocative drama takes place in the 1960s in NYC following the lives of men and women in the cut throat advertising business on Madison Avenue.

MadMen is sexy, witty, and highly addictive. Not to mention, the costumes are incredible.

Filled to the brim with sharp suits, quips, and banter, the show has inspired the present world of fashion. Banana Republic recently jumped on board to recreate the show's style in it's own Mad Men clothing line.

The premiere is this Sunday! You can go watch the screening July 25th at 10pm in Times Square. Dress to impress in your 60s attire for the pre-screening costume contest at 7pm. You can trust i'll be there.

You can find them in sophisticated gowns and little girls' tea party dresses.

Accessories and jewelry couldn't do without them either.

They have even made their way into home accessories.

Sewing Tips: Measurements

Measurements are not only the foundation for choosing patterns and correct sizing, but they are also the foundation for pattern making and should be taken accurately to insure a good fit.

Measurement Preparation:
- When taking measurements, measure over a lightweight dress or slip wearing the same undergarments you will be wearing with the piece you're making.
- Tie a string or ribbon around your waist for a reference point as well.

Measuring Tips:
- When measuring lengths, make sure the measuring tape is perpendicular to the floor
- When measuring widths around your body, make sure the measuring tape is parallel to the floor
- When measuring around your body, make sure the tape is comfortably close to body, but not tight. This will insure an accurate measurement.

Important measurements:
- Bust: Measure around the fullest part (holding measuring tape firmly but not tightly)
- Waist: Measure around smallest art of your waist (where the string is tied)
- Center front bodice length: Measure the center front from the base of the neck to the waistline
- Center back bodice length: Measure the center back from the base of the neck to the waistline
- Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips (including your bottom)
- Thighs: Measure around the fullest part of your thighs
- Skirt Length: Measure from waistline (or where waistband will be) to correct length. Measure at center front, center back, right side and left side

Take these measurements down in notebook that you can keep on hand when you go shopping for patterns or when you are drafting your own. It saves time and will help you get a great fit!

Textile Tuesdays Present: Seersucker

With this wonderful heat wave that has swept through New York this past week, my mind couldn't help but wonder to the cooler fabrics of summer. One of my personal favorites is seesucker.

Usually made of 100% cotton, this woven sports a rippled or wrinkled appearance making it great for relaxed summer wear. The fabric ripples are created in the weaving process, called slack-tension weave. The use of tightly woven, heavy-weight warp yarns and loosely woven light-weight weft and warp yarns created the unique texture of seersucker.

The weaving pattern creates a stripped or plaid design in the fabric. The name seersucker originates from the Persian words for milk and sugar (shir or shekar) in reference to the smooth and bumpy texture. The rippled texture actually keeps the fabric from clinging to the skin and allows air flow between the skin and fabric to keep you nice and cool. Also, since it's already wrinkled, there is no need to iron before wearing, just get up and go. Seersucker is featured in children's clothing, suiting, shirts, skirts, pants, and shorts.

So go with the summer time flow and whip up a couple of dresses or skirts to keep you cool this season!

Tribal Drum Performance

Last Fall I had the opportunity to study in Ghana. Their colorful fashions perfectly suit their vibrant and open minded culture. The fabrics they wear are intricate and beautiful to look at, but the meanings behind them go far deeper. The cloth weaving process is very spiritual. Certain ethnic groups in Sub-Saharan Africa believe that weaving should be done only in daylight hours because to work at night would be to weave silence and darkness into the cloth. Unique patterns also identify different tribes.

Kente cloth, the most famous of Ghanaian cloths, is a type of silk fabric made of interwoven cloth strips. It is a royal and sacred cloth worn only in times of extreme importance.

Blue- Harmony
Green- Spiritual Renewal
Gold- Spiritual Purity

SEWMoni's sewing classes got me thinking about when I first began sewing as a little girl in Hawaii. An elderly Japanese woman taught lessons out of her home. Frail and petite in stature, she somehow managed to maintain strict obedience in our small room full of young students without ever raising her voice. She was graceful and precise with her long skeletal fingers, working with incredible speed with the needle and thread. My sewing sensei taught me precision in my needle-work, but never allowed our class to venture creatively.

At SEWmoni the students learn the basics of sewing and begin to form their own projects. Teachers at SEWmoni help the students cultivate what they aspire to construct. Many of the current students have only recently explored sewing as a hobby and have already developed business ideas around the craft! Get inspired!

Sewing Tips: The Importance of Pressing

Below is an excerpt from 150 Sewing Tips by Mary Johnson, printed in Woman's Day in 1962. I found this booklet in my grandmother's sewing library. Reading it not only conjured up memories of my grandmother, but reminded me of the legacy of this crafting tradition.

The Importance of Pressing

* Good pressing is done slowly with a gliding motion. Don't bear down heavily when pressing seams open or darts flat or you'll get a ridge on the right side. Too much pressure also produces a shine on dark fabrics, flattens napped fabrics, and stretches loosely woven ones.

* Press seams open unless the pattern specifies otherwise. Start at bottom of a seam and work toward top.

* Press vertical darts toward center, underarm and elbow darts with fold down. When working with a heavy fabric, stitch darts, then slash to within about 1/2" of each point and press open.

* You must press as you go, but you don't need to jump up and press each seam the minute it's sewn. Join the parts that make up a unit, make any darts in it, then put it aside and work on another. When all units are prepared, press them before joining them.

* To prevent the topline of the hem from being embossed on the right side, press thoroughly only on the lower half. The upper half is given a once-over-lightly touch-up with a dry iron.

* Never press the bottoms of hems into creases before you hem them.

Textile Tuesdays Present: Organza

Organza is traditionally made of 100% silk, but is also created with synthetic filament yarns like polyester, nylon, acetate, and viscose. These filament fibers also give organza a slight resilience and resistance to being bent or folded making it perfect for billowy or structural garment/upholstery designs. Because of its looser weave, the fabric is light weight and has a transparent appearance. You can find them in any color, some with metallic threads, some embroidered, or some embossed.

Organza is created in the mills of China, India, France, Italy and the United States. Each mill boasts a specific type of organza. Chinese organza is mostly created with 100% silk. Indian and American organzas generally use synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon. However, organza from France and Italy is a bit more sturdy with a blend of nylon and silk yarns.

Silk organza is commonly used in bridal wear and evening wear. Whereas synthetic organzas are used for everyday interior purposes like curtains and accent pillows. Synthetic organza, especially the embroidered, embossed, or metallic designs, has even made its way onto table settings as a layering cloth to bring drama, color, and life to receptions and dinner parties.

Speaking of dinner parties, I remember my grandmother wearing an organza pin-apron while preparing for a summer seafood dinner. It was so beautiful and the use of organza made a common/functional item into something beautiful, beyond the confines of everyday duties like cooking and cleaning. She got quite a few compliments that night if I can remember correctly.

So don't be afraid to try new fabrics, it will not only challenge you as a sewer, but will also challenge your creativity and increase your inspiration as you work with a new medium.

WARNING!! It is HOT HOT HOT outside in Brooklyn today.

I just came back from running with Katie (SEW Moni Designer) and Taru (SEW Moni Sewing Instructor) and I can't express how HOT we were, even while doing push ups in the shade. I secretly prayed for rain the whole time.

After sweating and doing one to many sumo wrestler lunges, I was left craving Pinche Tacos (in Ft. Greene) and an ice cold lemonade. The heat (and muscle burn) also reminded me of Mexico: fun, great food, margaritas, strapless dresses made from Mexican fabrics and dancing till dawn.

Above it just a taste of my day and maybe it will inspire you to A. Get a margarita or B. Head for the border.

Sewing Tips: Facts about Fabrics

Facts about Fabrics

* Woolens are the easiest to handle, especially the firmly woven medium weights. They come folded wrong-side out, all ready or the pattern.

* Cottons are the next easiest. They are folded right-side out and when printed, or when the right and wrong sides are different, as in sateen, they must be re-folded wrong-side out, before pinning pattern.

* Tubular jersey and other knits are often manufactured with the right-side out, but sometimes come the other way around, so inspect them carefully before laying out the pattern.

* Some wools have nap, a surface finish on the right side that is smooth to the touch when brushed with the hand one way, rough when brushed the other. Use with nap smooth in a downward direction.

* Some cottons such as corduroy have a pile, smooth to the touch one way, rough the other. The smoothness is usually worn upward for clothing, directed down for household items.

* Synthetics, made in many imitations of natural fabrics, often have a nap or pile too, and they are used in exactly the same way as their natural counterparts are.

* When silk, rayon or synthetic velvet is used for clothing, the pile is usually worn upward for richer color and better wearing quality.

* With upholstery velvets, the pile is placed downward. The tone is subtler and it is easier to clean.

* Some fabrics must be held taut during stitching, with one hand ahead of the needle, the other behind it. This applies to heavy coatings on which the presser foot tends to move the top layer and cause uneven ends at the bottom of the seam; to plaids so that the lines stay matched; to synthetics and to sheers like organza, no matter what their fiber content, to prevent puckering.

Machine Embroidery: Spark Stitch

I found some old sewing notes my grandmother made as she was learning machine embroidery on her Singer. The complexity of these stitch patterns are amazing! Since her day, the cost to buy embroidered fabric is much lower and as a result the art of enhancing fabric with machine or hand embroidery has somewhat been lost. So take a sewing lesson from my grandmother, Norma Joy, on the Spark Stitch.

Spark Stitch

Supply List:
-Fine silk or mercerized thread
-Heavy silk or mercerized thread
-Embroidery hoop
-Sewing machine
-Feed plate cover, or machine with feed adjustment

Threading Prep: The Spark Stitch is done with fine silk, or fine mercerized thread on the bobbin and heavy silk or heavy-duty mercerized thread on top.

Machine Prep: The bobbin, or lower tension is loose. The upper tension is normal or slightly tight. The feed of the sewing machine is dropped or a feed cover late is used. Remove the presser foot.

Fabric Prep: The design is stamped or drawn on the right side of the fabric. Place material in hoops. If following a a pattern is preferred select one recommended for braiding

Beginning Stitch: Insert hoops under needle and presser bar. Lower presser bar. Hold end of top thread, lower needle, and draw bobbin thread through to top

Spark Stitch: The work is guided about in an even circular motion while following the design. This is usually freehand work and is done on the right side of the garment.

I feel quite inspired to try this myself on some dish towels, or maybe some old denim cut-offs. It could be quite cute right?

Sewing Tips: Your Sewing Machine

You Sewing Machine

* If the thread breaks when you stitch, the machine is improperly threaded, you've inserted the needle improperly or you are using the wrong make needle.

* If the machine has been unused for some time, oil it in the tiny holes provided for that purpose. Stitch through cotton strips to absorb excess oil.

* Regulate length of machine stitching to suite fabric texture. For heavy coatings, 12 to 13 stitches to the inch; for medium-weight suiting, cotton or synthetics, 14 or 15; for sheers, 16 or 18.

* Use a medium-size machine needle for general garment making.

* If the stitches don't look right, check threading and bobbin. If the trouble still exists, consult the instruction book.

* You can improvise a seam guide with a strip of adhesive tape about 2" long. Place it straight up and down on the machine plate as far right of needle hole as width of seam allowance (usually 5/8"). When you stitch, bring raw edges of fabric up against tape edge.

* If your machine puckers some fabrics take the needle out of the shaft and roll is on fine sandpaper; or sew through the sandpaper without thread (abrasive side up to sand won't get into the works).

* If machine skips stitches on synthetics, especially tricots, change to a fine machine needle and nylon thread.

Sewing Cirlces: Then and Now

Researching the origins of sewing circles in the USA, I found the beginnings alongside the birth of our country. Many started in churches, as those acted as the tight knit community centers of the day. One sewing circle at Ocean View Presbyterian Church in Delaware was formed in 1879 and served as a place of fellowship and education as well as a basis to fund mission work using handmade goods. This particular sewing circle still stands as the oldest operating society in Delaware.

Many sewing circles served similar purposes and even branched into politics. In an excerpt from Frederick Douglas and the Atlantic World, Douglas wrote a letter to the Lynn Anti-Slavery Sewing Circle in 1846 which shows an even greater social aspect a sewing circle can have.

During the 1950s and 1960s sewing circles took a turn toward the younger generation. Girls would gather in each others homes to hand-sew doll clothing and discuss fund-raising projects for church or school. Many served as a social club since completing projects took a back seat to gossip and eating snacks.

Today sewing circles are still found in churches branching now into community centers, home groups, and businesses that capitalize on sewing. I believe being part of a community is a beautiful thing and being able to share such a personal craft with one another in a group creates a place of endless possibilities. The sewing circle is not only a place to share useful information and inspiration about the craft but serves as a place to sharpen one's person and world views.

Why not start your own sewing circle. Start with a pattern, a social project, or even a simple minding party. Ask friends over once of twice a month to share in the fun and let it naturally evolve from there. Beginning and ending one project after another will establish a beautiful tradition in no time.

Textile Tuesdays Present: Batik

This Indonesian dying technique has been found in several other cultures in India, the Middle-East, Africa, and parts of Asia. Known for its hand-worked prints, this fabric depicts stories and expresses cultural art unique to its individual creators.

The majority of Batiks start with a plain weave cotton fabric and are made unique by using resistant dye methods. Silk and rayon fabrics are also a commonly printed on. This method alternates the use of waxes and natural dyes to create all over patterns, directional patterns, single scenes and motifs. Patterns are applied via stencils, carved stamps, and hand painting making it very personal and specific to the artist and region.

Use this fabric to create a bold statement in a dress or an eclectic addition to your home with a Batik wall hanging, a set of throw pillows, or if you're up to the challenge a quilt.

Looking to invest in your first sewing machine? Or maybe you've been wanting to upgrade your old machine?

From personal experience and working with students of all skill levels, we have gathered quite a bit of information and recommendations concerning the purchase of a new machine and have prepared a checklist to guide you in your search.

Begin at the Beginning
Some personal questions to consider:
*What will you be using your new machine for? Home projects, garment construction, quilting, etc.?
*How often will you be using this machine? Occasionally for clothing repairs, every day to manufacture your ouwn clothing line
*Do you need to transport/move the machine often?
These questions will help you determine what machine functions you need to look for when reviewing the product details of the machines

Life is easier with...
*1-step buttonhole function (4-step buttonhole is okay, but a little more tricky to sew)

*Decorative or quilting stitches (fun, but not necessary)

Misconceptions
Price is not always an indicator of the machine's quality. Purchasing a high priced machine does not always mean it's the best one for you and your end use.

My suggestion... start off with the basics. As your skills develop and grow, you will get a better grasp of what you need from your machine and can reinvest in the purchase of a higher-functioning machine.

Computerized machines are not always best. They are push button friendly, but are quite a pain to fix especially of the electronic board decides to burn out.

My suggestion... the simpler, the better. The dials and switches of a basic machine are much easier to adjust and fix than an electronic board or touch screen panel that may burn out.

Mother's Day

Mother's Day is a lovely day set aside to honor the mothers in our lives. Starting in Grecian times, it developed over the ages and became permanently ingrained in the American culture when Woodrow Wilson signed a bill declaring it a national holiday 96 years ago. It was all brought on by a daughter, Anna Jarvis, who wanted to memorialize the legacy of her mother who spent her life working on behalf of those less fortunate.

So let us continue the tradition and honor those that have not only given us life, but have influenced it as well.

We here at SEW Moni feel that something handmade and heartfelt is the way to go. Whether it be something sewn, painted, written, baked, or said, make your appreciation known.

The Apron

As our first craft show of the summer draws near, production has been in a bit of a frenzy in our final stretch to the finish line. We have been washing, cutting, pressing, sewing aprons and aprons and aprons oh my!

With the many aprons passing through my fingers, I couldn't resist thinking about their history. How many other women have been in the same place I am at this moment, sewing straps and pockets. Did they create their own patterns? What kind of fabrics and trims did these women use?

So let the search begin...

The aprons of Victorian era mimic the fashions of the day and incorporate the same fine fabrics and trims found on the intricate dresses of the day.

The apron made a drastic change in the 1920s reflecting the simplistic fashions of the time. The fine fabric is no where to be seen and the trims are replaced by simple style lines and a long sash to secure the apron. Functionality was the name of the game at the this time for aprons.

The aprons of the 1940s and 1950s sported brightly colored printed fabrics and ric rac trimmings. Utility and functionality still came first but with a playful twist on the design.

Gearing Up for Spring

The last 2 month's have flown by with little time to genuinely sit, and reflect. Today marks the first day that I'm actually doing so, and it's strange. It's strange not to be in constant movement. It's odd not to be on the go or cutting fabric. Where is my steamer and where are my students? Why am I not on my way to run a "sewing" related errand?

And that's just the point.

To every small business owner out there, I encourage you to take time for yourself. Relish in the shear fact that you are paving your way to something that is your own. I have not done so in too long and I regret that it's taken me this long to make time for a personal high five!

My father encouraged the above this morning after he noted that I was concentrating on all the problems lately and not the achievements. He reminded me to pull my employees aside and thank them. He also said that it's not going to get any less busier for a while so I should enjoy the craze.

And I will! And that's just the point.

While working on growing our craft business I also work as a freelance seamstress in NYC. Boy o boy the stories I have in regard to taking in clothing on the spot for photo shoots to quickly hemming a dress for someone who is off to a fancy dinner date!

Sewing comes in handy and therefore I am fortunate to sew for a WONDERFUL boutique in NYC called True Boutique, owned by a fabulous woman named Katie Campbell.

True Boutique in located in the heart of Nolita at 278 Mott Street. They carry a great size range (00-16) and provide on the spot tailoring for all purchases. Which means you most likely will have either Beth Edwards (Master Seamstress) or I tailoring for you!

Scissors

A good, sharp pair of Fiskars are a must! The brand has been around for ages, since 1694 to be exact. Their products are readily available and have great longevity. Not in the mood to buy another pair, make your well-used scissors like new and have them sharpened for a fraction of the cost. No wonder they are the world's #1 scissor brand.

Magnetic Pin Cushion

My mother introduced me to this wonderful invention, and I haven't used my tomato cushion since. Not only helpful for keeping your pins organized and at your finger tips, it's perfect for post project clean-ups. Just a slow sweep across your table, and it picks up any loose pins scattered about.

Grabbit is our brand of choice.

Pick one up at Joann Fabrics. Sil Thread in the NYC garment district is a great source too.

Seam Ripper

I lovingly call this the "sewing eraser" and it's is a must for pulling out those little mistakes that seem to show up as we are sewing. They are quite useful for creating machine stitched button holes too! Seam rippers come in a variety of sizes and shapes. I find that the one's with the longer handles are easier to control.

Iron

Voted best iron by the SEW Moni team and prized by our current students, the Rowenta Focus Stainless-Steel Iron gets rid of those pesky wrinkles and presses seams flat with beautiful smoothness and ease.

Excitingly, we have started our first set of sewing classes this week, and they are going great! It's always exciting to meet new students who are eager to learn the craft of sewing and take part the enjoyment of it all.

So far within our classes, we've managed to attract college students, architects, designers, administrators, and business owners. I find it interesting that sewing alone can bring such a diverse group of women together. It truly is a beautiful thing. With that said, we would love to have you as part of our sewing classes this month!

Registration for March sewing classes has opened!

We will be offering Beginning Sewing on Monday and Wednesday nights. Beginning Clothing Construction will also be taught on Wednesday nights.

During the growing stages of SEW Moni I've been praying about a social mission for our company. My initial thoughts were to support a mission abroad. Maybe a mission in Africa or an effort in the now devastated Haiti? But then, I realized that there is so much need right here in the USA.

Last week on our walk to lunch we witnessed a kid being caught and pinned to the ground. Scary. This week, I've seen way to many homeless people in shorts or bundled up like ice cubes in 20 degree weather. And, after exchanging a conversation with a fellow co-worker who as a single mom, adopted her abdonned little one, my throat felt shallow.

I've always felt fortunate and loved. I've never gone hungry or without a place to rest. I have a family who is completely supportive and such influences definitely kept me out of trouble. But not many have these things, not even one. And in the given economic climate, many, many more are suffering.

It's wild for me to even think about such circumstances and nor do I feel as if I could personally relate. The closest I've ever been to suffering was when I worked as an HIV counselor in a state clinic down south. Our daily influx of patients and counseling of test results was hard to swallow. I suppose the emotional anxiety I experienced, and the worry that someone would survive beyond their diagnosis is my closest taste of strife.

While I don't have a billion dollar charity fund or even a thousand dollar offering for many of the needs of our country, I do have knowledge in what I love to do: sewing. And with that knowledge I intend spark a movement to create and craft for those that need it the most.

During the months of March, April and May I am asking that you join us in a push to craft for people. Maybe there is a kid who's never had a doll or a boy who does not have a blanket. Or maybe there is a shelter who needs more sleeping blankets and pillows. Honestly, I do not know who and were these people are but we'll find them together. We will!

Please stay turned for more on this effort. I intend to put the word out here in Brooklyn, NY. It's my hope that there will be a week if not a month dedicated to weekly sewing groups in your neighborhood, a unified effort to share hope.

Fabric Experts Unite!

I recently took a trip to Staten Island to pick up fabric at a local Jo-Ann's store. While there I met an individual who sparked up a conversation with me about his design aspirations and quest to find the perfect wool blend. He noted how searching for fabric or even knowing an online site where fabric is critiqued, not just sold, is scarce. This brief discussion got me thinking that there are probably fabric critics out there and maybe we at SEWMoni could help build a list of such critics?

Selecting fabric is definitely personal and if not, a crucial decision regarding any project. Facets of a fabric's texture, down to weather or not it is washable, are important factors will affect your project.

All this to say, if you are a person who critiques fabric, we'd love to hear from you! Please send us your blog or contact information. Our goal is to link to students and craft peeps to one another as well as provide any information that might make sewing easier.

Although 2009 has been a great year for SewMONI, we are looking forward to all that 2010 has in store! In this coming year, which is only a day away, we will be starting a few new endeavors.

A SewMONI Update

Some exciting things are going on at SewMONI this month!

This past weekend was incredibly successful as we participated in our first show of the season in Corpus Christi, Texas. We sold out of all our aprons at the Peddler Show and we're looking forward to doing the same at our next craft show in Fredericksburg, Texas on November 27 through November 28.

SewMONI will also be making an appearance at the 3rd Ward/Brooklyn Base Handmade Holiday Craft Fair on December 12 in Brooklyn, New York. Brooklyn Based is sponsoring the event which will include not only craft based vendors, but paper good and local food companies too!

Next week we are photographing our last round of still life images with Photographer Winnie Au. Winnie is such a delight to work with and we wish her well as she travels to Paris for the next few weeks.

And, we are working on our very own fabric print designs, which look absolutely amazing in all their eclectic glory! It's wild to see creative inspiration take shape in such a short time.

All in all its been quite busy in our corner of Ft. Greene. When we are not completely consumed by work we seem to be by chocolate. I think the cold rainy weather has brought on this chocolate craving, and it seems like hot chocolate is the only cure for the winter weather blues. If in our neighborhood stop by Green Grape Provisions to get a pumpkin chocolate banana muffin. Better yet, sew with some chocolate thread and spare the calories!

Photo Collage: Take 1!

My installation shown lends somewhat of a taxidermy feel. It's a mesh of photographic landscapes, charms from my grandmother's travels, images of inspirational closeups and a single fabric swatch. All elements are adhered to the wall with delicate pearl drop pins reminding me of the places I've been, the people I've had the privilege of meeting, and the passions of my heart. Every time my eyes wonder across the wall, I fell good and smile.
Here's how you can create the same feeling in your own unique way!

DIY Directions:

Materials

Photos: Choose your favorite photos and be sure to select a mix of 8x10 prints and/or 4x5s. Having a range of horizontal and vertical shots while paying attention to muted and bright color schemes is good to do to. Also, if you want a more streamlined and sophisticated feel, stick with a color theme of just black and white. Or selecting a certain subject matter, such as European bridges or romantic floral photos, would lend to refinement.

Pins: Pearl head pins, straight pins or T-pins work great. The thicker the pin the better!

Pin-able Trinkets: Includes anything that is light enough to be pinned to a wall. Ha! Stickers, patches, charms from a charm bracelet, feathers, paper, ticket stubs are all great options. Have fun with your selection and make it heart felt.

Completing the Collage
1) Arrange your goodies on a flat surface. Make sure to balance close up shots with landscapes, horizontal and vertical pictures. Be mindful of the colors and textures too.
2) Begin pinning the photos and keepsakes to the wall. Center your pin in the picture so that it hangs straight, or you could anchor each corner with a pin instead. I like the pictures to float a bit, so I chose to use one pin. The pinning may take some time, and you may find that you need to reconfigure a few things once it's all up, but be patient and have a critical eye. The wonderful thing is that changes are easy to make and since you're using pins instead of nails, the holes are almost unnoticeable if you have to move a picture.
3) Enjoy your work!

Patternmaking & Pandora

It's a quiet, crisp, fall day. Or at least it would be quiet if I wasn't cranking up my favorite Pandora stations as usual. ;) Everyone at SewMoni knows my usual picks, M.I.A., MGMT, Balkan Beatbox, ridiculous 80's songs most people save for karaoke nights...

Even though it sounds like a crazy dance-party in my apartment, I'm all business, taking measurements of a tote bag and then transferring the results to the pattern I'm drafting on the computer.

I'm working from home today, developing a pattern and how-to instructions for one of our staple SewMoni totes. It's coming along well, there's still plenty to do, but it's getting there. Moni and I have been working on the patterns together for the past couple months. I'm excited because we're breaking out of the old traditional layouts that have been used for sewing patterns since the earley 1900's! I think the modern look will make our patterns very easy to read for today's sewers and aspiring sewers. Stay tuned!

Finding Fabric in NYC

I LOVE fabric so today I'm excited to blog about excellent places to find great fabrics in New York City! :) There's nothing like walking into a fabric store and being able to browse through all the unique fabrics first-hand. The first area I go to get inspired and gawk at gorgeous fabrics is the Garment District in Manhattan. I'll share two of my favorite spots there first, then a great place for bargain fabrics farther south by Canal Street in Chinatown, and then a hidden gem down in Brooklyn!

Let's start with Mood. This store is amazing! It's the biggest fabric store I've seen in the city. They have three levels, packed with great fabrics of every kind you can imagine. It can get a little pricey but if you're looking for a very specific kind of fabric they're bound to have it. And if you're shopping for fabric for a special occasion this is definitely the place for you. You'll find Mood at 225 West 37th Street on the third floor.
P.S. I just found out you can check out their floorplan on their website! Awesome!

After I hit Mood, B&J Fabrics is always my next stop. Located at 525 7th Ave this store is smaller but it still has a great selection and the prices are a little more affordable.

New York Fabric Warehouse, (also known as Long Island Fabrics) is the place to go for cheap fabric finds. You have to dig around a lot more at this place, but you just might get lucky and score a great deal! You can find it at 406 Broadway near Canal Street. I recommend walking west on Broadway a bit while you're there because there's a couple more bargain-priced fabrics stores nearby as well.

The Baltic Thrift Bazaar in at 141 Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn Heights is a great second-hand shop with the best vintage fabric selection I've found anywhere, ever! :) A lot of their fabrics and notions are focused on upholstry and home decor which makes sense because they're nestled in with all the antique furniture shops on Atlantic Ave. This place is a must-see!

Project: Plates

The blank chartreuse wall in my kitchen has been begging for some life since I moved in months ago. It wasn't until today that I discovered the remedy for the boring lifeless walls. Inspired by my mother, who hung a collection of blue and white porcelain plates in her yellow living room, I went shopping. I went on a whim after work today, determined to find my own vintagy hodgepodge of plates. To my wonderful advantage, I discovered six very different yet beautifully cohesive plates. Some of them are reprints of classic patterns or inspired by vintage textile designs. My luck continued when I went to Target, who, being the amazing retailer that it is, had plate hangers in stock!

Once I got home, it was just a matter of stretching the plate hangers over the back of the plates (although I had more difficulty taking the things out of their packaging than completing the project itself), figuring out a harmonizing arrangement and hammering nails into the wall. It made such a difference in my otherwise sterile Ikea kitchen. I love the depth and color the collection adds. It's just lovely.

I bought two blue and white plates in honor of my original source of inspiration, my mom, Laura. In fact, I feel a little more at home after it was all said and done. Maybe because it reminds me of my parents home in Florida, or maybe it's because the plates' vintage designs carry such history and depth that it brings a little sense of history and depth to my new NY home. Either way, I like the idea of both.

You too can have your own wall o' plates, just follow these simple steps:

Pick your plates.

I picked mine up at Marshalls for four bucks each. But Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Fishs Eddy, antique stores, or even stoop sales may have what you're looking for. Mix up your colors, prints, and sizes for an eclectic look. Or go for a color theme, like red and white, to have a more cohesive collection. An odd number of plates is usually more asthetically pleasing.

Don't forget to get plate hangers, wall anchors, and nails.

I found some a local hardware store and Target. Home Depot and Lowes should also have them. Make sure the size of the plate hangers will fit your plates.

Plan your design.

Clear off your table or a space on your floor and lay your plates out. Move them around into an eye pleasing form where color, silhouette, and size are balanced. I did 3 columns of 2, with the middle column offset.

Hang your plates.

Start with the center plate. Nail in the wall anchor and hang the first plate. Then take a plate that was next to the middle plate, position on the wall and mark. Nail in the anchor and hang the plate. Continue until your design is complete.

Production Day

It's a calm, drizzly day in Brooklyn. We sit above the street in a room of glowing lights with nothing but the sound of sewing machines and rolling tires sloshing across wet pavement to soothe our ears. The pile of raw fabric cuts slowly dwindles as the pile of the stitched and turned grows in number. It's a production day here at SewMoni.

Steph and I chit chat during our short lived breaks to pin or turn out the freshly sewn aprons. Strangely enough, our middle school days come up in conversation amongst other, more serious topics like past Halloween costumes, fabric prints, and music. It's enjoyable talking about nothing sometimes. We pause for a drink. Steph has her tea, and I stick to my heavily sugared coffee I bought at food cart parked outside the subway station. The coffee is getting cold, but still carries a nice kick.

As we work with Moni's machines, it's like getting to know a new friend. Figuring out how to wind the bobbin, changing stitch length, reversing the stitch, etc, your basic friend stuff. I'm excited to see what more will come with the collaboration between Moni, Steph, and I.

Cooking 36 at a Time

Our week closed with the welcome of sickness :( Boo, sniff, BOO!

Being sick in Brooklyn is rough. Our recent weather has been quite unpredictable. Random rain storms with afternoons of humidity and night breezes are why I am sick. I think it's secretly May.

However, aside from illness, there are many things to be excited about; more specifically, an invitation I received to participate in a recipe exchange this month! This may sound 1940's at first, but after a little thought, it's all to much and très generation-X. With one email sent by Drofa Speak, sew MONI will now be apart of a mini thread which will result in 36 NEW recipes!

This invite has entered my life at a great time because I was just thinking that my current food menus could use a make over. My staple baked chicken with asparagus and mashed potatoes has kissed my Anthropolgie faux china one too many times this month. Why not mix it up in the kitchen?!

Coughing Gets Old

I already have a cold and I'm sick of it. My old time remedy of whiskey and tea is not working and the raspy-ness of my throat is loaded.

BUT, I am still sewing today in preparation for our next Peddler Craft Show in Corpus Christi Texas! Whoop!

Craft shows are my absolute favorite. I live for freshly popped popcorn and homemade hot fudge within arms reach. Scouring multitudes of booths to find that perfect gift is invigorating for me. Shows generate a buzz that is alive and happy, a break from our economic pot hole. And, random dialog between shoppers and vendors is a treat because your reminded that the world is not so big.

On that note, I've met so many local as well as national vendors who have been "peddling" around the world for 10, 20, and sometimes even 30 years. Some are wood workers while others are soap makers. Some make garments while others tan leather. As a whole, the majority will attest that there are fewer and fewer hand crafted items displayed each year. BUT, non will deny that peddling and homemade eats always equates to a welcoming environment.

Seamstress Blues

After reading the "bust" on illegal immigrants working for American Apparel, I was upset. Here is a company who prides themselves on their American Made products while all the while employing illegal immigrants to get the job done. The shear knowledge of their labor force was unsettling to me for 3 few reasons:

A. Employing illegal workers only de-values and contributes to the [already set] low wage movement of workers and production within the crafting industry: carpentry, sewing, sculpting, etc.

B. Illegal immigrant employment does not allow for those who are legal to move forward.

C. Why aren't we spending money to teach sewing or crafting in primary education through home economics classes?

Sewing is dear to my heart and everything involving it's process is sincere. Sewing takes time, it's labor intensive and requires a keen eye. Taking pieces of fabric, cutting to speck and ultimately constructing something flat into form is magical.

I understand that at the end of the day a business has to make money. This is America and capitalism is the game. But at what cost and exploitation? If continually employing illegal immigrants becomes the standard, then we are only moving backwards.

I'm proud to note that our little company has legal workers. We are few but hope to be many. And while our business goals may be capitalist in nature, we are not in the market of exploitation. Let us sew like the wind and build a thriving sewing circle to match!

Hello, Hello! :)

Welcome to the SewMoni blog! I'm one of the new members of SewMoni and I'm happy to share with you a little bit about my background and why I'm excited be a part of SewMoni!

I came to New York originally to study Industrial Design because I wanted to find out how absolutely everything is made. I love creating objects by hand and being involved with the whole process. I feel attached to the objects that I make by hand and I think handmade pieces have a personal touch that is missing from mass produced products.

My mother taught me how to sew and crochet at a young age and I've been hooked ever since. I love making clothes, but my most favorite things to make are a little more utilitarian: bags, pillows, stuffed toys for children, and the list goes on.

I was thrilled when I stumbled across SewMoni online last month. I love the unique fabric choices and the feminine aesthetic. I also love that it's family-run. It's immediately apparent that every SewMoni piece is a quality labor of love. I'm so excited to be involved with SewMoni and making these kinds of beautiful, useful objects. I know that people will cherish them and they will be a part of their daily lives.

A Bag full of Inspiration

So these last couple of weeks have been incredibly exciting and exhausting. Working part time at Gap, closing with them most nights, and working early mornings at SewMoni have left me a little drained. But the other night, I got an email from Moni. She told me this:

Tonight I saw a tote with the words: Dont give up.
I don't know about either of you, but the last few days at my "other jobs" have been tough.
Keep the above on the tip of your lips. Reading this phrase tonight (unexpectedly) actually made me feel motivated again & excited about endeavors to come--- if I just hold on and don't give up.

It was more than encouraging. As all of us begin the building process at SewMoni, creating patterns, developing a new website, and pulling fabrics for next season, we're finding that the push and pull of our other supporting jobs seem to be pulling and pushing a little harder. I like to call this resistance. In the words of David Pressfield "It's a repelling force. It's negative. Its aim is to shove us away, distract us, prevent us from doing our work" (The War of Art).

It's with determination and encouraging words like "Don't Give Up" (that was written on a tote of all things) that we propel ourselves forward and push through the resistance. To fight for your dream and your passion is probably one of the most noble acts you can do in your life. So don't give up. Press on. It's what you were made to do.

The Beauty of a Bag!

I stumbled across an organization called Bags for the People, a non-profit organization that encourages the use of plastic bag alternatives by providing free bags they create from repurposed materials. Anything from old t-shirts to fabric scraps get made into usable, functional bags at their "sweatshop socials" and their volunteer bag making workshops and programs.

I was really amazed, inspired, and impressed to find that a group of three people who worked in our very own Union Square Farmers Market in NYC put action to their eco beliefs. The idea behind the organization is quite honorable and the system itself is brilliant in the least. To think that the making of a couple of bags not only helps the environment but also brings people together, young and old, the skilled crafters and the creative novices... it truly is a beautiful thing. Who knew you could sew AND save the world?

As a new member...

It's with excitement and sheer giddiness that I'm writing to you as an new creative contributor of SewMoni.

As a fashion designer and recent college graduate, I moved from Florida to NY about 7 months ago in hopes of finding my fashion niche here in NY. However, considering the economic foolishness that is going on, it's been a bit of a struggle to break into the fashion industry as companies can only afford one design assistant as opposed to three.

In my search I came across SewMoni. I was immediately drawn in by the quirky, vintage aesthetic and its homegrown, crafting roots. After speaking with Moni, the head designer and business owner, about the new vision for the growing company I couldn't wait to get started.

You see, I've been steeped in crafting and the arts my entire life and decided to hone my creativity in fashion. I think if you exmined my heart closely, you would find that the muscle tissue is actually threads tightly woven together, that the heart beat is truthfully just music, and that it is really pumping creativity through my veins. To find a company that shares the same passion for crafting, simple beauty, and design I was a little more than ecstatic.

As a new member I have to admit my excitement in being a part of the creative team here at SewMoni.

I'm Happy to be an American

I was recently mugged and assaulted in Brooklyn, NY. I know. I felt violated, scared and the experience left me jaded for a few weeks. Also, it happened at 2:30pm in the afternoon, in broad daylight! Is that even allowed? Luckily, a few people witnessed, heard my screams and actually came to my rescue. They helped me, picked me up off the ground and took care of me till the police showed up.

Even though our economy stinks and I happened to be a victim of the increased crime rate due to the economic slump, I'm still happy to be living in the US. I'm so blessed that strangers were there for me and their efforts proved to me that city people are kind.

Coincidentally, much of my sewing inspiration is derived from America. The two horse prints above are Robert Kaufman fabrics and I LOVE them. Horses remind me of Texas and all things patriotic. And, the print with flags perfectly moving in sync while horses gallop in glory gives me a sense of comfort.

On a similar note, this week marks a huge gallop for sewMONI. We are bringing on 2-3 part time employees! It's important to me that our small company supports employment efforts in the USA. All of our goods are handmade in the USA one stitch at a time with much care. Our newest employees are quite talented and I am anxious to see what new things will be generated within the next few months.

The King is Back in Fabric

Today I've been thinking about Elvis. Don't know why but I have!

My parents took me to see Graceland when I was about 10 years old. Exploring Elvis' mansion and witnessing multitudes of women cry as they strolled past his grave site left such an impression upon me. So when I Googled "Elvis fabric" and learned of its popularity, I had to post and write about my findings.

I'm not crazy about the prints I discovered but the idea of commemorating the King via fabric is stellar. Now if I can only find fabric with silhouettes of Edward Norton.

Toile for You and I

I've always been a fan of Toile or fabrics that connotate history. Toile came to life in the 16th Century and is French for "web" or "cloth". It's quite popular within the home decor markets and among Provencial interior designers. I dig it's complicated and harmonious print scenes.

My initial introduction to Toile was via my Mother and her many country Toile home decor projects. Toile prints from soft pink to primary black were always in the mix at my home in Texas.

I've begun to incorporate Toile for sewMONI Spring 2010 in light pastels and steel grey colors. I love the way it makes me feel regal in taste. Also, having a bit of Toile around [in home decor or personal accessories] reminds me of time past and new adventures to come!

2nd Wind

I just returned from watching Julie & Julia and WOW! I'm literally speechless.

I left the theater genuinely inspired and happy. I didn't for see my admiration at all nor did I expect to be so enthusiastic about a per se chick flick! Even at my disgusting Bermese dinner before the film, I noted to myself that the movie would most likely be okay, and that there was a 90% chance I'd regret spending 12.50 USD to see it. Plus, I knew we were going to a theater with uncomfortable seats which always lends to an off night at the movies.

Boy was I wrong. [Wrong about the movie but right about the seats :)]

Julie & Julia was straight forward and a sincere delight. Julie's quest for vindication was real and corky. It made complete sense why she needed daily tasks and a final deadline to feel focused. I fight deadlines all the time and struggle with finding purpose in my every move. But after tonight's boost of energy I feel a 2nd wind.

I desire to create, eat, laugh, be romantic and live!

But first sleep.

If you are looking for fabric shops in your area I suggest Googling Quilt Shop Locations. This may sound like a "no brainer" to sewing fanatics but to beginning sewers, maybe not. My absolute favorite quilting store is The Quilt Cottage located in Corpus Christi, Texas. They have an incredible selections of cotton fabrics. They also have a nifty online shop and online orders are shipped out rather quickly.

I grew up sewing since the age of 7. I don't quite remember my first sewing project or how it turned out. But I do remember many afternoons of watching my Grandmother sew. Her techniques of ironing fabric, stitching by hand and manning a sewing machine were magical.

My goal then was to sew in a straight line.

"If I can sew in a straight line then I might grow up to be a woman like her" was my frequent thought.

Now, I usually tell myself, "If I can spare enough time to just finish this sewing project then....". Not as idealistic of an initial aspiration but nonetheless personally motivating.

All this to say, I still love every minute of sewing, crafting and creating. Sewing gives me a sense of joy and genuine satisfaction. It makes me feel like a domestic goddess. Seriously.

Sewing even makes me feel dashing too.
